Twitter acquires news startup Scroll in a push for subscriptions

On Tuesday, Twitter incorporation said that it had recently bought news technology company Scroll.

The major reason for acquiring it is to use it as a part of an upcoming subscription offering.

Twitter is already working to offer something new and different type of content on a social media site. It will mainly involve audio and long-form content after previously acquiring the newsletter platform Revue. It is a platform that offers the services of formulating a newsletter to capture your audience and update them with the new content that you’re posting now and then.

On the other hand, the newly acquired company scroll allows users to subscribe and read news articles from publishers including USA Today, BuzzFeed, and Insider without any advertisement or delays.

This new deal will support Twitter and develop a subscription feature that is highly smooth and fast. It will let users access premium features from news outlets or a writer’s Revue newsletter, stated by the company.

Scroll was launched in early 2020 and its users have to pay $5 per month for ad-free versions of new websites namely The Atlantic, The Verge, The Daily Beast, and The Sacramento with most of the free going straight to publishers.

And now the Scroll’s team of 13 persons will move over to Twitter and work together to integrate the better product subscription service to be launched “later in 2021”.

Meanwhile, Scroll will go into “private beta” and pause all new signups. Additionally, the current users will enjoy their services as before.

Lastly, until now no further details regarding financial agreement or transaction are being released.
