According to the Omdia report for LED Supply & Demand Market Tracker, Seoul’s ranking of the third is a first time achievement, recording shares of USD 898 million in the total packaged LED market with growth of 4.3% year after year to surpass Lumileds, a LED manufacturer in the U.S.

Seoul has continued to invest around 10% of annual revenues towards R&D over 30 years with a focus on optoelectronic semiconductors, including an investment of over USD 100 million, and now holds a portfolio of more than 14,000 patents – the largest amount in the LED industry worldwide. In addition, Seoul has furthered the development of second-generation technologies and prevailed in numerous patent litigations across the U.S. and Europe by successfully obtaining permanent injunctions and recalls of the infringing products sold.

“After seeing an article about Jimmy Carter, who was also the son of a farmer, to become elected as president of the U.S., I became inspired. My goal was to achieve more through creating innovative technologies and success stories that can empower young people in Korea and deliver hope for them. Throughout my journey, I have intensely focused our profits towards R&D and fought strongly in patent litigations every step of the way. I believe in the culture of fair competition, in which respecting intellectual property is essential,” said Seoul’s founder Chung Hoon Lee.
