First Major Producer, Hero to shut plants amid a covid-19 surge

With the raging surge in Covid-19 cases all over the nation, one of the country’s major producers of two-wheelers, Hero MotoCop announced on Tuesday a halt to its operations at all its manufacturing plants or facilities for around 4 days. The company has planned the shut in a staggered manner between April 22 and May 1, 2021. 

Out of all giants and producers, Hero is the first major producer to take this move, a temporary suspension of all manufacturing activities. This has been decided as a precautionary measure to safeguard its workforce. Even though the government didn’t announce an all-India lockdown, only contaminated zones are being strictly prohibited. 

On Tuesday, the company also stated- “In keeping with its commitment to the safety and welfare of its people, Hero MotoCorp has decided to proactively halt operations temporarily at all of its manufacturing facilities across the country, including its Global Parts Center (GPC), in view of the ongoing escalation in the spread of Covid-19 across the country”. 

The Hero MotoCop has six Manufacturing units or plants with a manufacturing capacity of 11.6 million units at a time. The plant locations are Dharuhera, Gurgaon, Neemrana, Vadodara, Chittoor, and Haridwar. 

The company said All plants will resume normal operations post this short shutdown period.  Hero MotoCop is the only biggest player to announce such a sudden shut down due to the fear of covid surge. 

Lastly, another leading power transformer manufacturer in Meerut, Kanohar Electricals announced that its plant would be at a halt for three days beginning from Monday. They stated- “We have closed the plant and will review the situation on Wednesday. A four-day-long shutdown will help break the chain and give us clarity on the situation of employees and workers”, stated Dinesh Singhal, MD of Kanohar Electricals.
