The government is to introduce a new programme which will allow the NGOs to take care of senior citizens, who are living alone, in their homes. The announcement was made by the Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot on 5 February 2020. The new law is different from the Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act, 2007 and Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) which has the provision for taking care of all senior citizens. A New Scheme for Senior Citizens: As per the 2011 census, there are about 10.38 crore senior citizens in the country. The new law will ensure the senior citizens who are living alone will be taken care of in a better way. Daycare centres will be set up for these purposes under the law. These centres will have a canteen, libraries, and other facilities. Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY): Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana was launched in March 2017. Under the scheme, Rs.7,000 will be provided to each person. So far, 1,24,142 senior citizens have been covered under the scheme. The government aims to reach out to 5.20 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme.
